Talking GolfGetaways 45: Caddying the Old Course with Fox Sports’ Shane Bacon

As Scotland Week on “Talking GolfGetaways” comes to a close, FOX Sports’ Shane Bacon brings the house down in typical entertaining fashion, joining hosts Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch for a conversation about his days as a caddie at the Home of Golf.

Commentator, on-air personality and host of “The Clubhouse” podcast, Shane has seen his share of golf around the world, but it’s St. Andrews that burrowed into a special place in the depths of his golfing soul early on — and that love and respect for that game comes through in the fifth (and final) episode of our first-ever Scotland Week.

Find out how sitting on the roof of a college house with his friend Will and some “really cheap, horrible beer” led to a summer lugging golf bags on some of the world’s premier links courses. And hear why carrying a bag for one specific female golfer still makes him laugh (as it did Mitch and Darin), plus what it was like to caddie in a group that included five-time Open Champion Peter Thomson.

Shane also recalls playing golf in Scotland years later that resulted in an unforgettable 36-hole double-dip of Kingsbarns followed by the Old Course on a VisitScotland trip with the GolfGetaways crew in 2015. And he tells of other favorite experiences he had while living in St. Andrews (including playing darts at the Whey Pat Tavern, the oldest pub in St. Andrews), plus offers suggestions on courses just outside St. Andrews that should be visited if you have the time (favorite links such as Ladybanks and Crail) — all of which give you the real feeling of what living in this most famous of Scottish towns is like.

It’s enough to make you want to move to St. Andrews tomorrow and start caddying for the golfers of all shapes, sizes, sexes and swings who make the pilgrimage every year to experience the Old Course’s magnetic history that has endured for centuries — and most likely will for centuries more.
