As passionate golfers with a worldwide resume of golf trips under their belts, the husband and wife team of Michael and Carol Beard, both of whom work in the health-care industry in Myrtle Beach, S.C., have dedicated their vacations to exploring the planet’s great golf destinations. And in Episode 73 of the “Talking GolfGetaways” podcast with Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch, Michael shares his answers to our most-asked “Emergency 9” golf-travel questions.
Unable to limit his response to “Favorite Course or Destination Anywhere in the World” to just one selection, Michael lists two worlds-apart locations and four courses — Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand, and Royal County Down and Ardglass in Northern Ireland. And having visited many of the world’s top courses already, their “bucket list” now focuses on playing golf in all 50 states, with stops at Oregon’s Bandon Dunes, Minnesota’s Hazeltine, and Wisconsin’s Whistling Straits among the top priorities.
Michael’s choices for “Best Place You’ve Ever Stayed” come from a recent sojourn to New Zealand’s Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Bay of Islands and Slieve Donard Resort & Spa next door to Royal County Down in Northern Ireland.
And he goes all-in on the “Best Food Ever Eaten on a Trip” question with the monstrous Wagyu Burger at the Australian Golf Club, saying it’s truly “out of this world good.”
The “Single Most Important Thing Besides Golf on a Trip” is an easy one for Michael and his wife Carol, as they both cherish meeting new people from each country they visit. And a great rain suit is his choice, as it is for many golf travelers, as the “One Piece of Apparel You’d Recommend.”
Michael explains why, though he’s an 11 handicap who prefers to play from about 6,400 yards, Carol is the real golfing rock star in the family, a 17 handicap who will play from any yardage (but prefers 5,500-ish) and who has won multiple club championships. He also explains why Carol is his “Favorite Golf Partner” — a no-brainer for him — because she’s his “best friend and a fierce competitor,” a perfect combination for two people who share such a love for the game.
Finally, Michael circles back to Ardglass Golf Club in Northern Ireland as his “One Course You Wish Everyone Knew About,” noting that it’s called the “Pebble Beach of Ireland” for good reason, with breathtaking views and an historic castle as its clubhouse.
It’s a fun and interesting “Emergency 9” from a pair of traveling golfers as committed as you’ll find. Anywhere. Enjoy the connection.
