PGA National Resort retains Staples Golf Design to redesign Squire Course

PGA National Resort & Spa has retained Staples Golf Design to lead a redesign of the resort’s Squire Course. The Squire Course was designed by Tom and George Fazio and opened in 1981. The course, which is one of five 18-hole courses under the resort’s ownership and the shortest of the lot, has not been significantly updated since.

The 6,447-yard course from the back tees last saw substantial work in 2012, when new turf was planted, bunkers were rebuilt and teex boxes and greens were expanded. It’s named after Gene Sarazen.

Staples Golf Design was formed in 2002 by principal Andy Staples. Staples emphasizes sustainability and efficiency in his projects, delivering courses which are easier to manage under his Community Links viewpoint.

Staples is currently working on restoring Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago. His work in renovating the 1916 Willie Park, Jr. design, Meadowbrook County Club in Northville, Mich., has drawn much acclaim.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the new ownership of PGA National on the Squire course,” said Staples. “I’ve watched tournaments on this property since I was a kid, so it’s a real honor to be working here. We’ll be coming up with an innovative solution that address golf’s future, and that’s really exciting.”

The Squire Course redesign will be overseen by Nick Mazzella of Mazzella Partnership.

Canada-based Brookfield Asset Management purchased PGA National Resort & Spa from its prior owners in 2018 for an estimated $230 million.
